AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) -- Teeth are chattering in New England, where scientists just spent about a month scrutinizing weather data before proclaiming Tuesday that, yes, Maine has pulled even with Vermont in bragging rights for the region's lowest recorded temperature - 50 below.
That's wicked cold, as a New Englander might say, the breath freezing in a puff on the first syllable. But even though it's far from the chilliest the nation has ever seen, the attention to detail in declaring the tie - and not really the temperature itself - might show how deeply we feel about the weather.

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. -- It was so cold Thursday morning that icicles hung from the trees and fences in Port St. John. The temperature in Orlando dipped into the 20s for first time in five years. The cold knocked out power and damaged crops in Central Florida.Progress Energy just raised rates, but they can't seem to keep the power on in the freezing cold weather and the temperatures will go down again Thursday night. Sixteen-thousand Central Florida families had to bundle up against the cold Thursday morning with no heat in their houses.

MILWAUKEE -- Wisconsin emergency officials said people need to be on the lookout for frostbite and hypothermia during this week's cold snap.Forecasts call for temperatures to sink into the single digits in the south and 10 to 15 below in the north starting Tuesday morning. Wind chills could range from 15 below to 40 below.
