SOUTHERN NEW JERSEY (NationalWeatherOnline.com) - A hybrid storm that combined tropical and non-tropical characteristics slammed into the Mid-Atlantic Coast early Friday morning, leaving its greatest impact on Southern New Jersey residents. The storm developed from clusters of thunderstorms over the warm Gulf Stream waters several hundred miles off of Virginia Beach on Thursday, then backed west toward the coast as it became better organized. Heavy bands of rain rotating around the north and west side of the storm dropped up to one inch per hour rainfall rates at times Thursday night, and left nearly five inches of rain on parts of Southern New Jersey, prompting urban street flooding. The threat for tornadoes embedded within tropical rainbands prompted a tornado watch for all of Central and Southern New Jersey during the morning on Friday. A persistent northeast wind leading up to the storm had already brought some coastal flooding, but the strong wind and heavy rain associated with the storm as it neared the New Jersey coastline overnight Thursday night only exacerbated those problems, causing moderate flooding so significant that school was canceled or delayed in a number of communities. As of mid-morning Friday, the highest officially observed wind gust was 56 mph at the Atlantic City Marina, but local NBC affiliate NBC 40 reports a shoreline weather observer with a reliable measurement of 68 mph, and many National Weather Service spotters reported between 50 and 60 mph wind gusts. Power is out to at least 19,000 South Jersey residents Friday morning.
This is the second such hybrid storm to affect the East Coast within the last month - a hybrid storm fed by the remnants of Tropical Storm Danny crossed Cape Cod, Massachusetts, on August 29, with a 61 mph wind gust, and tree damage from Cape Cod to Southern Maine. A hybrid storm contains both tropical and non-tropical characteristics - in these cases, exhibiting a warm center with thunderstorms, but not possessing the circular symmetry typical of tropical storms.
Though no wind warnings were in effect Thursday night from the National Weather Service (a wind advisory was set to expire at 7 PM, then extended until 9 PM), our own correspondent "Supercell" posted on this event last night, warning of the potential for a hybrid storm along the Jersey shoreline to cause destructive winds, moderate coastal flooding and nearly five inches of rain.
We hope this will only be the first of many times our correspondents forecast major events through our Northeast Regional Page. Though still in Beta mode (other regions of the country are under construction), this was exactly the type of situation we believe NationalWeatherOnline.com is built for - voices from all corners sharing thoughts and ideas of how the weather may transpire.
We also hope a number of folks will become involved in reporting weather events as they are occurring. Pictures and/or video can be easily submitted via Flickr, quick reports can be made using the interactive map, and full posts (including pictures and video) can be authored and immediately posted by correspondents. Please visit our Northeast Regional (Beta) Page at northeast.nationalweatheronline.com, and look into contributing. We're excited for NationalWeatherOnline.com to continue leading the way in major weather events, by providing an outlet for those who can better prepare the public.

The following is an excerpt from the Sun Journal, a local newspaper in Lewiston, Maine. Especially bothersome in this story for those in the meteorological community is the statement from the Babe Ruth State Tournament Director that children were held in the dugout during a severe thunderstorm to avoid having them walk across a parking lot in metal cleats.

HARRISON — Two baseball players escaped serious injury Monday afternoon after apparently getting struck by lightning during a severe thunderstorm.
Matt Woodbury, 16, of Fairfield and Travis St. Pierre, 15, both members of the Central Maine All Stars, were in a dugout at the Field of Dreams recreation complex off Route 117 when the storm hit. Woodbury said he was leaning on St. Pierre, who was up against an electrical outlet. The current apparently traveled through both boys and exited through Woodbury's lower back. The American Red Cross has produced a film that shows what would happen
in the event an F5 tornado struck a small town and a big city. Clips of the video can be seen here. For what it's worth, we searched the American Red Cross website and found this link for tornado preparation tips, but could not find the video anywhere on their site or their YouTube page as of this posting.

BORDEAUX, France, May 13 (Reuters) - Hail storms earlier this week destroyed vines in the Bordeaux area and put the commercial survival of some wine growers at risk, officials said on Wednesday. The damage, affecting thousands of hectares, will hurt the harvests of 2009 and 2010 and could also lead to insurance claims. There will almost certainly be fewer bottles, which might help lift recently depressed prices.

NOTE: Raw video of the actual collapse of the Dallas Cowboys practice facility during the damaging thunderstorm has been posted on this site. Scroll down on this page to view it, or click here to link directly to the post.
Sad news from the Dallas Cowboys organization tonight that Rich Behm, team Scouting Assistant, has been permanently paralyzed from the waist down following the collapse of the team's indoor practice facility during a damaging downburst wind event on Saturday.
The following is the statement from the Dallas Cowboys:
"Scouting assistant Rich Behm (33) sustained a fracture to the Thoracic spine (10th Thoracic vertebrae). The fracture caused a severing of the spinal cord at that level causing permanent paralysis from the waist down. He underwent surgery to stabilize the fracture last night and remains in stable condition at Parkland Hospital.
Special teams coach Joe DeCamillis (43) sustained a fracture of one of his cervical vertebrae (C-7/T-1). He remains in stable condition without paralysis at Parkland Hospital. Surgery to stabilize the fracture is scheduled for Monday morning.
Assistant athletic trainer, Greg Gaither (35) sustained a fracture to the tibia and fibula in his right leg which was surgically repaired last night at Baylor University Medical Center. He should be released later this week."
